Whether it is for communication for business purposes or to keep in touch with friends on family over long distances, video conferencing has been an important tool for communication as well maintaining and strengthening ties between two or more parties. Many of us use it, but not many really understand the types of video conferencing available for use.

There are five main types of video conferencing systems used for business and individual usage.

First of all, telepresence is the one that is the most similar to a live meeting. Usually, there will be large screens mounted above conference tables or to the walls so that the people on the other side of the conference can be seen at life size. The furniture and gadgets are also mounted at eye level so that it will seem as though all the participants are sitting around the same conference table and facing one another. Some advanced conferencing software can even stimulate 3D video conferencing to make it more convincing.

The second type of video conferencing system is room based video conferencing in a meeting room, which includes large screens fixed to the walls. They can also be mounted on carts so that it will be easier to move them anywhere they are needed.

Another common type of video conferencing used by businesses and individuals is desktop video conferencing, which resides on devices such as desktop computers, laptops, smartphones and tablets.

Next up is the hybrid video conferencing system which combines multiple types of elements. The most common hybrid is room-based video conferencing and telepresence, which are overlapped for use depending on the situation. Vendors may provide integrated video conferencing systems for different business applications or companies depending on their needs.

Last but not least, there is the service-based video conferencing, a fully managed unit that is easily available from telecom carriers, which the underlying network infrastructure is under good control of. You can also opt to purchase web-based video conferencing subscriptions over the Internet, and many of them come with managed services from the vendors with a contract.

Finally, before you decide on which type of video conferencing to use for your business, it is advisable for you to investigate the costs and features of each package offered by vendors, as costs vary greatly depending on the type of system and the scope of system installation, as well as the video quality of the video conferencing system.
