When you are choosing a litter box for your cat or cats, you will find that there is a huge range of prices as well as styles.  Whereas years ago, the only choice was a cut off cardboard box or a dishpan filled with litter, now you can find high tech, expensive litter boxes as well as the old familiar low tech box filled with litter.

Although it is still possible to just cut off a cardboard box, fill it with litter, and let the cats have at it, it is better to use a litter pan designed for cats that will be easier to clean and less likely to cause health problems.  A simple plastic pan will be easier to handle than a cardboard box cut off, and fitting it with a litter liners will be a snap.  And, rather than contributing more to our landfills with a discarded cardboard box, the plastic pan can easily be cleaned and sanitized.  These are the least expensive choices and will be within anyone’s range, generally under $10.

At a more medium level, under $60, there is a selection of covered and corner style litter boxes that will accommodate one or several cats.  The corner boxes will provide space saving, and will work well with an apartment or smaller home.  Some of the boxes in this price range have a self-cleaning feature that does not use electricity.  These boxes merely have to be tipped to one side and the wastes are deposited in a receptacle for easy disposal.  The enclosed cat litter boxes at this level usually include a filter of some kind, either in the top or on the sides to help reduce cat box odors.

What might be called the medium-high cat litter boxes will usually sell from $60 up to about $300.  Many of the automatic litter boxes fall into this price category.  These include many of the rake style cat boxes that will clean themselves by means of a mechanical rake after the cat has visited the box.  The waste is placed into a closed receptacle for easy disposal.  Some of the automatic boxes in this price range have disposable litter trays that are used for up to a month, then thrown away entirely.

At the upper end of the cat litter box spectrum, there are cat waste disposal systems that will cost more than $200.  One of these products is an actual cat toilet that is used on top of the toilet in your home.  This will completely dispose of the cat’s wastes down the toilet, removing any need for you to change a cat box.  Another design is the revolving globe type of box.  This will sense when the cat has left the unit and revolve to remove the clumps of waste from the litter.  Once again, a waste container will hold the feces and clumped urine until it is time to dispose of them.
