Safety should be your first and biggest concern when doing any type of work at a great height. From a professional construction worker to a DIYer, paying attention and using the correct equipment will keep you and the people around you save from harm, and help you get your job done quicker. Keep yourself and the people working with or around you safe. Here are 5 important tips to stay safe when you are working high up an extension ladder or any type of ladder.
First: Check all your equipment before you use it! This is the simplest step. It does not matter how careful you are if your scaffolding is defective. Also, be sure to check all the connecting joints and wheels if your equipment has them.
Second: pay attention to your environment! All the safety equipment in the world will not help if you place your lean to ladder on unstable ground, or if you over weigh your make shift platform and flip it!
Third: make sure you are using the correct equipment for the job you have and the number of people you will be using. A step ladder or a stool is fine for around the house use, but will be useless to a group of painters who need to reach a second story. In that case, use an aluminium scaffold tower, which reaches much higher than a step ladder and supports the weigh of several painters and won’t become unbalanced. Fourth: Use the equipment as directed. Pay attention to the warning signs on you equipment and use a taller ladder if you need it! And lastly, just plain be careful. Make sure paint buckets, scrapers, hammers and other dangerous tools are not left on or near the extension ladder or aluminium scaffolding where they could fall and hit some one, or trip someone and make them fall!
