A perfect 40th wedding anniversary gift would be a gold ruby ring. You can even get matching his and hers rings, because rubies would look good on men and women alike. Rubies are said to be the king of gemstones, this bold red gem originated from India, but can also be found in other parts of the globe. The color of the gem would depend on where it originated. The best type of rubies nowadays are the Burmese type, the color and clarity of this particular gem makes it the most expensive among the ruby family.
