Everything About Everything

Want to Watch Over the Air Broadcasts in HD With Your Antenna?

There is no denying that at one point or another in the near future conventional television will be no more. Not only is the market for these sets declining at a steady rate, many consumers have switched their trusty old set for a new HD Tv.

Buying one of these televisions is pretty easy but it still isn’t as easy and straightforward as buying a conventional television. The reason is that the world of high definition is a little confusing due to the terminology that surrounds it. If you look at specifications you will notice that there are a lot of numbers and terms that if you are not a very tech savvy person you may not know what they mean. Remember when you tried to buy your first computer? That is the same thing that can happen to those looking forward to bring home a high definition Tv for the first time.

However, one of the most important things that you should consider if you are looking forward to buying one of these amazing sets is if one of the activities that you are planing to do is watch “Over the Air” broadcasts in HD. Over the air refers to receiving broadcasts through an antenna. If you do, you have to make sure that the product you buy has a built in receiver. If not, you would have to buy an external HDTV tuner to do the job.

While many would think that every product has its own tuner the truth is that this is not the case. While many do especially recent models, a few years ago most televisions that where being manufactured did not include one. Still, many models that are being manufactured today do not have one. This is especially true if you if you look at the cheap sets in a store. Remember than when we say “Over the air” we are referring to free broadcasts and not paid satellite services like Dish Network and the like. If you are subscribed to any such services you do not need a tuner to continue using the service.

Tuners are not limited to air signals, some of them are even able to decode unencrypted QAM signals or PAL depending on the region where you live allowing you to watch cable Tv in HD. Of course, you wound still need to pay for the cable subscription.

When you are ready to buy your first HD Tv always think about what you want from it before you actually go out to search for a product. This way you are less likely to make mistakes that can be costly in the long run.
