If you have made the decision to take the first step towards home ownership by getting a lease purchase, lease option or rent to own home, then chances are that your next step is going to be trying to locate a home.  Here are some things you should know as you get started on your search!

Searching for Homes Listed for Rent to Own

One of the first things you will likely do is get on the internet and do a search for rent to own homes listings.  Given the current market, more sellers are considering creative options in order to sell their homes.  Chances are you will find a few homes in your area that are listed for rent to own.  A great place to search is Craigslist, but you may also check your local MLS listings.

Considering Homes Listed for Sale

While you may find a rent to own house by simply looking through listings, it may require a bit more work on your part.  One thing to keep in mind is that although many more home sellers are considering the rent to own alternative, many more do not even understand how rent to own works!  I have literally spoken with thousands of home owners over the last few years who had their home listed for sale but were amenable to a rent to own deal once they understood how it works.

Using a Rent to Own Company

If the idea of explaining the ins and outs of rent to own to a home owner who may or may not be interested is daunting to you, then you may want to use a rent to own company.  They will be able to approach the owner of any home that is on the market and negotiate with them on your behalf.  They should also provide other services, like contract preparation and verifying that the mortgage is current.
