Hopefully all of us know how a kind word at the right moment can lift us up when we’re feeling down. But for those of us who don’t have a wise soul nearby to dole out verbal medicine, moving on quotes can be a great help in letting something go and feeling like ourselves again. In some cases, we may even change to become better, stronger people as a result of having come through a difficult time in life.
A great quote on relationships that have ended comes from Alexander Graham Bell, who said that “When one door closes another door opens; but we so often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us.” Although this quote will probably not be that great a help in soothing emotions right after a breakup, it can plant a little seed of sense and hope in the broken heart that will help to mend it. But this quote is as true of life, as well, where we encounter set backs and have to get up and keep going. It’s good and natural to take time to grieve and contemplate things that have gone wrong, but we have to shake this lest we settle into a paralysis that could really mean failure.
Also remember the truth of one of Albert Schweitzer’s quotes about heartbreak and moving on: “In everyone’s life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit.” Like the phoenix rising from its ashes, we humans have a great ability to recover from apparent disasters. The end of a relationship or the loss of someone we love can be devastating, but we usually come out of this darkness stronger and more ready to meet other people who we may come to love.
