If you’re anything like most of us, when it comes around to those times of the year for buying gifts, you spend a lot of time trying to think of things to buy and a lot of time getting frustrated because you have a hard time dreaming up those new gift ideas for loved ones. Some people seem to have the knack of conjuring up fresh, creative thoughts and turning them into just the right gift at the right time. Then there’s the rest of us!

And there seem to be so many occasions during the year when gift buying is essential. After Christmas comes birthdays and anniversaries, as well as the weddings and other social events like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day – and if you’re lucky enough to be part of a large family, that brings more problems because the size of the gift buying task is even more immense.

One of the most difficult people to buy for is often Dad, because he has been around for so long and he already has just about everything he could want, doesn’t he? You need to work extra hard to surprise him with a welcome present – so here are some ideas that you can use to trigger a few thoughts of your own:

  • Does he have an interest in cars? Does he drive a five year old slow and steady Honda Accord but secretly long for something that’s fast, thrilling and unaffordable? Well, how about renting for him, for a day or a weekend if you can afford it, that super fast road machine that he only reads about in car magazines and lusts after?. Find the local rental place that offers models such as a Porsche 911, a Chevrolet Corvette or a Dodge Viper. Then turn up on his drive with it and see how he comes to life.
  • Books are a traditional standby when you can’t think of anything else. But how about finding a writer or a topic that’s just a little outside his normal range of interests, something that he wouldn’t buy himself but a book that might just stretch his horizons on politics or philosophy or sport and challenge his thinking?
  • Jewelry is not an obvious choice for men, other than watches maybe, but if his wife or girlfriend has a special piece of jewelry that she treasures, then buy him a piece that co-ordinates nicely with it. For example, if she has a favorite sterling silver heart charm bracelet, would he wear a sterling silver ring (as long as it’s not a heart ring!) as a companion and matching piece?  If she has a gold ring, would he wear a gold signet ring?
  • Technology: a lot of men are entranced by the latest electronic, hi-fi or home theater gizmos. Does he have a Nintendo Wii and if so, how about the Wii Fit program to entertain him and promote fitness? Are there other games for the Wii (or X-box, or Playstation or whatever) that would encourage activity and fitness? Would he like the newly-announced 3D version of the Nintendo DS? The market changes rapidly – take a look out there and see what there is available now.

Some of these may be outside your budget and some may be inappropriate for your Dad. But simply use these ideas as a starting point and see if you can use them to develop your own ideas for that unique gift for Dad.
